CEO Message: More Services, Convenience for YOU

by Brent Binkley
Thank goodness, summertime is finally here! While I’ve been with the credit union for seven and a half years, this is my first message to you as President & CEO and I look forward to many more. There are some new and exciting services on the horizon that will greatly benefit you.

You now have access to 45,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide - more than 200 of them are in and around Lorain County. Refer to our Web site or call for listings of the ATMs nearest you. This is just another way of being more convenient to you, especially with higher gas prices.

We’ve established Overdraft Advance in addition to the other forms of Overdraft Protection we offer. Most everyone with a SELCCU Checking Account is automatically enrolled to cover the embarrassment of having a check returned or a debit card transaction declined if they don’t have enough money in their account.

I look forward to serving you and hope all of you take advantage of the fine products and services your credit union has to offer.

Care Connection: Salvation Army Shoe Voucher
Throughout July, SELCCU will be accepting donations for the Salvation Army’s Back to School Shoe Voucher Program. All money donated will be used to provide school shoes for children in need. Stop in and leave your spare change in one of our collection jars or ask to have funds withdrawn from your account.

As part of our People Helping People philosophy, SELCCU participates in volunteer activities for community and social service agencies. Members are invited to participate in these activities.

Thanks to member involvement we collected more than 400 items for Genesis House, which assists victims of domestic violence. In June, we collected a boxload of toys, games, arts and crafts supplies and office supplies for the Children’s Developmental Center.

  Millionaire for a Day Winner

“Millionaire for a Day”

Alec Escandon, 7, of Avon was randomly selected as SELCCU’s “Millionaire for a Day.” The drawing was held at the end of National Credit Union Youth Week, a time when credit unions encourage financial literacy among young children and teens. Alec, pictured here with his father Roy, received the equivalent of one day’s interest on $1 million and a SELCCU gift pack.

  Summertime Tax Tips

These tips from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can help you prepare for some possible tax breaks:

If you are (or soon will be) a newlywed:

bullet

Report any name change to the Social Security Administration so your name and Social Security Number will match when you file your next tax return.

bullet

File address changes with the U.S. Postal Service. This way you’ll continue to receive your mail, including important tax-related documents such as W-2 forms.

bullet

Consider whether you’ll file joint or separate • returns.

Working students may be exempt from withholding taxes. This is dependent upon several factors: whether you can be claimed as a dependent on your parents’ tax return, your income, any unearned income (interest, dividends, etc.) and having no tax liability for the previous year. Your parents or their financial advisor can offer guidance.

Another tax break for the season... summer camps. Many working parents must arrange care for children younger than age 13 during the school vacation period. The cost of day camp can count as an expense towards the child and dependent care credit.

Expenses for overnight camps do not qualify. If your childcare provider is a sitter in your home, you’ll get some tax benefit if you qualify for the credit. The actual credit is also based on your income.

For more information, check out the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov.
